6. Who is cirilo F. Bautista

Cirilo F. Bautista is a poet, fictionist and essayist with exceptional achievements and significant contributions to the development of the country’s literary arts. He is acknowledged by peers and critics, and the nation at large as the foremost writer of his generation.

Throughout his career that spans more than four decades, he has established a reputation for fine and profound artistry; his books, lectures, poetry readings and creative writing workshops continue to influence his peers and generations of young writers.

As a way of bringing poetry and fiction closer to the people who otherwise would not have the opportunity to develop their creative talent, Bautista has been holding regular funded and unfunded workshops throughout the country. In his campus lecture circuits, Bautista has updated students and student-writers on literary developments and techniques.

As a teacher of literature, Bautista has realized that the classroom is an important training ground for Filipino writers. In De La Salle University, he was instrumental in the formation of the Bienvenido Santos Creative Writing Center. He was also the moving spirit behind the founding of the Philippine Literary Arts Council in 1981, the Iligan National Writers Workshop in 1993, and the Baguio Writers Group.

Thus, Bautista continues to contribute to the development of Philippine literature: as a writer, through his significant body of works; as a teacher, through his discovery and encouragement of young writers in workshops and lectures; and as a critic, through his essays that provide insights into the craft of writing and correctives to misconceptions about art.

Major works: Summer Suns (1963), Words and Battlefields (1998), The Trilogy of Saint Lazarus (2001), Galaw ng Asoge (2003).

9. 3rd world geography by cerillo bautista

This is the poem of third world geography by Cirilo F. Bautista

I like Third World Geography because it discerns the era of Martial Law. Third World Geography become an eye opener for me, millennials and to those who didn’t know Martial Law regime or to those who wasn’t born yet in that era. This poem shows how the society suffered from poverty in the hand of Marcos. It depicts the selfishness of the government; selfishness in human rights and freedom. It also describe how abusive the government is.

The message shows hopelessness of the Filipinos. I imagined how the people suffered and begged to have a food and to have a proper treatment for human. The government are being deaf and shows no concern to the rants of the society and the human rights are not fair that time. During the said era, Filipinos are praying for miracles but only the wind hears the words. Even if they begged for it, the government wouldn’t care and shows no interest for the complaints. The prayer of the Filipinos became futile. They didn’t even worry for the people in the country.

The Martial Law Era and today’s society is very different. I think Marcos’ Martial Law is the worst administration that we had in our country even if I was not born that time, even if I didn’t witness the regime, I feel like I know a little bit information by watching the documentary film and by reading the 2 poems which is Third World Geography and Apo on the Wall. This literary pieces helps the 21st Generation to know what happened that time. I appreciate the situation in the past because we can’t live today if we didn’t looked back from the past. I understand the happenings in the past are traumatic and full of chaos, but I think there’s a bad situation too today such as in Marawi. Being millennial, I live with freedom unlike in the past that they are like in a jail. I really appreciate that I live freely today because maybe someday Martial Law will be implemented again, not only in Mindanao but for the whole country.

24. the anatomy of a filipino by prof.felix bautista

The Anatomy of a Filipino

The anatomy of a Filipino by Prof. Felix Bautista talks about what it takes to be classified as a Filipino and how Filipino can one be? Also would it really matter if ever we are from a different race and has different a name?

The poem the Anatomy of a Filipino starts by a changing of lines from boys to girls and girls to boys. Those students saying stuff about being a Filipino aren’t exactly a born Filipino. It includes racial differences, having foreign names, being a foreigner born in the Philippines.

Examples of the said qualities in the Anatomy of a Filipino:

Some have an American First Name Some has a Chinese Last Name They speak in English They buy foreign products They eat foreign cooking

But amidst those qualities that they have, are they short on being a Filipino? In order to become a full-pledged Filipino do we have to be strictly bound to our limitations? Is being a Filipino only mean:

Being born in the Philippines Buying all local products Using a local instrument for music Painting only with local materials

These products-things that we produce as a Filipino were meant to be used from the way or our liking and needs, as it also has a variety of its own. Being fully bound to serving only us Filipinos will only make us close minded and not amiable to accept other foreign things.

In order for us to call ourselves a Filipino we must:

Wear our Flag and country with pride Have a good heart Immeasurable love for our people and country
